Session summary:
This site development workshop focuses on specific ways that NWP sites can increase diversity, access and relevance in their summer invitational institutes. Sicangu Writing and Action Project, San Diego Area Writing Project, and Oakland Writing Project, all participating sites in Project Outreach, will lead participants through activities that are intended to help them rethink their summer invitational. These include:
- strategies for recruiting a diverse group of teachers,
- ways of making the content of the institute relevant through new readings,
- use of outside speakers and discussions,
- and suggestions for ensuring responsible and productive conversations about difficult issues.
Participants will have the opportunity to review their current practices, set goals for their site, and develop strategies for change. Directors, Co-directors and teachers leaders involved in the summer invitational and who are interested in questions of diversity will enjoy this workshop.
