Current Offerings

The dedicated educators of the Oakland Writing Project welcome all teachers who wish to grow in their craft and share their talents and experiences with others in the field. If one or more of the OWP’s programs or workshops intrigue you, please contact the leaders and facilitators who have provided their phone numbers or email addresses. They will be happy to talk with you about opportunities in the OWP and welcome you into the community.

Offerings at Oakland Schools

If the Oakland Writing Project is a house, then the Summer Invitational is the heart at the center, where newcomers are welcomed and initiated into a community of teachers and learners. Each of the surrounding rooms is an opportunity for professional development or community service.  OWP has a series of current offerings that allow entrance into the work of the writing project as well as a community of learners.

Customized District Workshops offer help in facilitating district-wide change in literacy education, with after-school programs, inservices, and intensive workshops that are tailored to the needs of individual schools and districts.  A Writing Series designed for classroom teachers K-12.  This after-school series offers teachers a venue to expand their knowledge of effective writing instruction, develop skill and confidence in their teaching of writing, and improve student engagement and achievement in writing.

Teachers who would like to nurture their own writing as a way to enrich their teaching can consider the Advanced Institute, a week-long workshop, invites OWP fellows gather to explore a common theme in education as well as extend their current classroom research and practice.  Lake Huron Writing Retreat, a week-long residential workshop, invites teachers from across the state to live the writerly life—discovering and exploring their own voices as well as discuss the implications of teaching writing in classrooms.   MCDiG provides ongoing intellectual challenge and collaborative support for those interested in exploring formal ethnographic and discourse analytic research through a university-school partnership.

Finally, the Local Summer Camp for Young Writers extends an invitation to 3rd through 10th graders who love to write. The program provides ample opportunities for students to share their writing and work on their craft with experienced Writing Project teacher-consultants.
